A Very Special Sweet Plant

Sugar cane and sugar beets have competition from a sweet South American plant: the sweet herb Stevia rebaudiana. Extracted from this natural source, the sweetener steviol glycoside is known for its intensive, delicious pure sweetness. Nearly free of calories, beneficial for the teeth and suitable for diabetics, stevia is an effective sweetener in beverages and desserts as well as in yoghurt and muesli. As it is 200 to 300 times sweeter than conventional sugar, stevia needs only be used in small amounts.
